MEMBERS VISIT NEW MUSEUM
Nineteen section members drove to Oklahoma City on Saturday October 1, 2022, to visit the First Americans Museum. The mission of the museum is to share the cultural diversity, history, and contributions of the 39 distinctive First American Nations in Oklahoma today.
The museum aims to highlight the history of the First Americas of Oklahoma. The state itself is named from two Choctaw words, Okla, and Homma, meaning ‘Red People.’ They note that only a few tribal nations were indigenous to what is now the State of Oklahoma: all others were removed from homelands to US-designated Indian Territory.
The center serves as a dynamic reminder to promote awareness about the unique diversity, cultures, history, contributions, and resilience of the First American Nations in Oklahoma.
MBCA members were moved by the many stories that recounted the treatment and resettlement of Indigenous people in our nation to our state.
Afterwards members drove over to the Bricktown section of Oklahoma City for a lunch at Toby Keith’s “I love that bar and grill.” It was great to see long time members Ben and Sharon Cunningham, Bill and Pat Nash, and John and Sally Mueller who have relocated to the OKC area.
